Sometimes, career seems like too small a word for such an important part of our lives.
Maybe vocation is a better way to say it. It stems from a Latin word - vocare. It means to be called. And ultimately, vocation is about the journey towards wholeness. The act of becoming ourselves.
How becoming ourselves intersects with work is a tough question, because we expect a lot from our careers. We want them to meet two of our biggest needs, but they’re often in conflict: the need to express our gifts and talents in the world, to work with purpose and passion, and the need to earn a living, to support ourselves and our families.
If you’re caught between these two needs, it’s like being in the middle of a battlefield, not knowing where your allegiance lies. On one side you’re pulled by the voice of calling, and long to work in a meaningful way. On the other side, the voice of safety and security is equally loud, shouting that you can’t afford to follow your dreams.
So you wind up feeling disconnected from your essence and purpose.
In our work together, we’ll take a holistic approach. You’ll have a chance to explore the complexities of these issues, as well as the history, influences, and experiences that bring you to this place in your life.
And I won't give you a bunch of career tests. That would be like needing a prescription to figure out your life. But you're not sick. In fact, you have access to apowerful medicine right inside of you: your imagination.
Your imagination can often lead the way out of career confusion.
So in our sessions together, I’ll ask you to ignite your creativity and stretch the muscles of your imagination:
- You’ll explore stories, images, themes, and patterns
- You’ll look for the wisdom lurking within day dreams and dreams
- You’ll play with imaginary lives
- You’ll hunt for where and how you project your “gold” - the gifts you haven't yet owned
- You’ll dialogue with inner characters that haven’t had much time in the world
- You’ll meet parts of you who want space at the table of your life
Bolstered with these insights, you can then decide if the timing is right to take a risk, and allow yourself to take actions that will lead to doing the work you want to do.
I know what a huge question that is, so I’ll be right there with you, supporting you all the way.
